There is a rapture on the lonely shore;
There is society, where none intrudes.
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more...

-Lord Byron

The Peralta Trail

I've accepted the fact that one must rise up early to get in some Arizona hiking, but I don't mind. Six am can be beautiful in the desert.

The Superstition mountains continue to be my favorite spot to explore, and this early morning in March finds me at the Peralta trailhead. I'm hoping to summit and possibly find the wind caves.
Our wet winter has turned the desert into a green oasis. I wind through trees as the sun rises and sparks a fiery glow on the red sandstone rocks. Hawks circle overhead looking for a last meal before it gets too warm. I climb higher and higher.
The trail seems to disappear as I get close to the top. I find a cave, not too deep or wide though, and wonder if this is the famed wind cave.

I don't think it is, and circle around hoping to climb higher. Somehow though, I get turned around and find myself going back down the trail.

It seems as though this hike was a good introduction to the mountain, but like a gold digger or miner, it is going to require many hours of work and exploration of this mountain range to find all of it's hidden gems.

The Lantern Festival

The sun was setting in the Utah desert, clouds filling up with shades of pink and orange as we slowly made our way out to the Lantern Festival.

We find a spot and lay out our blankets, then read the instructions to get our lanterns ready. The creative processes of my nieces and nephew flow as they decorate their lanterns in their own unique style.

Cbug draws mushrooms, Flooey does a self portrait, and crazylegs fills her lantern with a million flowers.

I write a note to lost loved ones, and welcome any alien life that may come upon my message.
Cbug excitedly asks if he can light them with the lighter. I can tell that his parents don't usually let him play with fire, but I'm the uncle.

He is thrilled, as any young boy would be.

The night sky becomes an ocean of wishes as the lanterns slowly rise.
It's the most magical experience we've encountered together as our wishes are sent out into the universe.

Inspiration Point

I haven't seen California this lush and green in....forever. I think the plane has taken a detour and I've been re-routed. The call to be in the mountains above Berkeley is even stronger now.
Tilden regional park just above the city offers great hiking trails and jaw-dropping views of both the bay and the inland valleys. I find a trail and just start walking....

I lone black cow comes across my path, and is just as curious about me as I am about it.

Woah big fella.

I keep going, and eventually find myself at a place called Inspiration Point. The clouds have partially lifted and the Golden Gate Bridge is visible.

A couple is sitting on a park bench overlooking the bay. It's the purest example of strained love I've seen in quite awhile.
and I find it beautiful.

The Final Huzzah

The month of March was filled with some of my greatest Arizona memories to date. The strange and bungled, botched and weirdness of all kinds of people flocked to these Renaissance grounds to find open arms and welcoming smiles to all kinds of folk.

and I was a part of it all.
I share my final Huzzah moments and memories until this faire festival returns to the desert next year.

I'll be there, and I hope to see you as well.

Ye Olde Jousting Tales

Twas with a legg of turkey between my lips
as trumpets call out the mighty and brave.

Stallions carry riders to fame
or death
on this day of jousting
at the Fest.
Swig your ale,
and raise your fists
in triumphant jubilation
as your rider boasts the victory to be.

We wont go down without a fight,
on this day of jousting and defeat.
Hip, hip, Huzzah!
Hip, hip, Huzzah!
The crowd screams in delight
as impaled our foe becomes.
Death be conquered, righteousness prevails
on the field of battle
as points crown the only true One.
Huzzah, ye wankers, Huzzah!

Spring training

This isn't a story that will hold you captivated on the edge of your seat.

It's more of a journal entry into the diary of my life.

Spring baseball training is here again in the desert.
My good friend CJ is a huge baseball fan, has been his entire life. It's rubbed off on me. I usually only go to one Spring game each year, and this time around is was at Hohokam Stadium, home of his beloved Oakland A's, against my favorite team the Angels.
Ironically, we went to lunch at Mambos earlier this week, a local Dominican Kitchen in Chandler. The DR is home to many a professional baseball player, and on this occasion several came in to eat while we were there, the most famous being Angels player Albert Pujols.
I sit behind home plate with a burger and a beer, listening to the crack of the bat and the pounding of leather as the ball hits the glove.
Sunday afternoons in the Spring are best spent this way, at least I think so.

All Hail! The Arizona Renaissance Festival

For the past twelve years (give or take a year or two), I've been driving past the "Renaissance Festival" sign at the base of the Superstition mountains in the east end of the valley. I would look out into the vast desert and wonder what truly happens here for six weeks.

This past weekend, I finally made it myself, and it was, in one word, glorious.
As soon as I entered the gates, I felt transported back in time to the Renaissance era of yesteryear. Busty corseted women and lanky knights sauntered past me, wizards and pirates strolled across the courtyard, executioners donning black capes and elf children scampered through the trees.
I'm pulled into a comedy show of irreverent nuns, a man with a mean fiery whip, three guys and some drums, belly dancers, fire eaters, and a spectacular carnevale.

This was only the tip of the iceberg though. You can try you hand wielding an axe as you attempt to throw it at a target, practice your archery skills, or perhaps show your strength as you lift the mighty mallet to impress your lady.

I go grab a leg of tasty meat with a dark pint of ale, sit back and enjoy.
So much to see and do, I'm thrilled that I decided to get a season pass so I can return for more adventures all throughout March, as there is still so much awesomeness to be found.

Be prepared, as there will be more to come over the next few weeks, but until then you wenchs, spires, kings and wizards....
